Dad’s Hat Pennsylvania Rye Whiskey teamed up with a Pennsylvania maple syrup producer to create their first-ever barrel of Maple Syrup Barrel-Aged Rye, a limited release which will be available only at the Dad’s Hat Rye’s distillery in Bristol, Pa., beginning tomorrow, December 1, for $50 per bottle.
The local distillery’s latest product is the ultimate distilling recycling story and it goes like this: Dad’s Hat Rye founders John Cooper and Herman Mihalich have been working with Keystone Homebrew Supply to send their used whiskey barrels to Grinarmls Maple Syrup Company in Somerset, Pa. for the past three years. Their maple syrup is aged in the Dad’s Hat Rye barrels, then the barrels are sent back with the maple syrup coated in the wood. Last summer, Cooper and Mihalich took one of those maple syrup-aged barrels back and filled one with rye whiskey, aging it for the past 4.5 months to produce a limited-edition batch of 90-proof maple syrup barrel-aged whiskey. That very whiskey is now available—perfectly timed for the holidays.
“We’re reducing, reusing, recycling and refilling,” said Cooper. “When many people think of the colder weather, they think of maple syrup, so the timing of this release couldn’t be better. Our friends in Somerset County make absolutely delicious maple syrup, and we love what we’ve tried so far from the barrels. The subtle maple notes really blend well with the whiskey, and we’re very excited to release this product to our customers.”
What’s even cooler is customers can purchase 15-gallon Dad’s Hat Rye barrels at Keystone Homebrew. (Find ’em at 435 Doylestown Road in Montgomeryville.) There, you can also score Dad’s Hat Rye Whiskey Barrel-Aged Maple Syrup—available in 250-ml bottles for $19.95 each.
