Now Brewing in Bucks County: Great Barn Brewery

Great Barn Brewery is a family-owned and operated farm brewery, the first in Bucks County. Their journey started four years ago when Durham Township began to change its zoning laws. Great Barn approached the township about opening a farm brewery and after a two-year waiting period, they were permitted to begin brewing for distribution.

All of their grains are grown on-site and are malted locally at Double Eagle in Huntingdon Valley, PA. Water for the beer comes from a private well on the farm, while other ingredients such as hops, fruits, and honey are sourced from local farmers.

According to Maryana Ferguson, P.R. manager for Great Barn, the farm was bought by her father-in-law 40 years ago. It used to be a dairy farm but due to complications involving diluted goats’ milk was shut down and remained idle for 20 years. The Great Barn family is very excited about the farm’s new existence as a microbrewery.

Great Barn originally wanted to open a tasting room on the premises but it didn’t make sense with zoning regulations. Instead, they plan on opening a location in nearby New Hope, sometime mid-summer. There, Great Farm will feature 16 different beers on tap.

“We’re also going to be starting a barrel-aged program for our specialty beer brewed with local produce such as cherries and raspberries,” said Ferguson. This program will be headed up by Great Barn’s head brewer, Christopher Bowen, an internationally recognized beer historian and award-winning brewer.

Here is the full farm-to-glass Great Barn beer menu:

Currently, Great Barn beer is only available at a handful of local restaurants in Bucks County. Here are a few places you can typically find their beer on tap:

Look for Great Barn distribution to expand once the tasting room opens this Summer.
