Press Release

Germantown Historic Site Hosts 2nd Annual Holiday Beer Tasting Event

PHILADELPHIA, PA.  October 15, 2009- Cliveden, a historic site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, will host a special beer tasting event and fundraiser on December 5, 2009.  The 2nd Annual Cliveden Winter Beer Festival will showcase a special selection of seasonal and limited-edition holiday craft beers from the nation's top craft breweries.  It will also feature an impressive lineup of Christmas beers from international breweries.  The Festival will take place on the historic and picturesque grounds of the Cliveden Museum-the scene of the 1777 Revolutionary Battle of Germantown.  Cliveden is located at 6401 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19144.  www.Cliveden.org.

"Who says history has to be dry?" asks David W. Young, Executive Director of the Cliveden National Trust.  "The Winter Beer Festival is a recent addition to Cliveden's menu of lively programs offered throughout the year.  A special event like this is just one of the ways that Cliveden continues to serve the interests of the community, as it has since 1767.  Funds raised from this event will help support a variety of Cliveden's education and community programs," added Mr. Young.

Craft brewers from around the country will join some of Philly's hometown favorites to make the day a fun event for all.  A great lineup of special guests and speakers will educate and entertain attendees as part of the event programming.  Included among the special events will be a demonstration of the brewing process led by the Cliveden Brewers Club.

The Cliveden Winter Beer Festival has two ticket options.  VIP Admission (1:00-5:30pm, $65, online advance purchase only) includes a special one hour private session held inside the Cliveden Carriage House, where breweries will be pouring their most coveted limited-edition brews, a ticketed lunch, and admission to the general session.   A very limited number of VIP tickets will be sold.  General Admission (2:00-5:30pm, $40; $65 at the door if tickets are still available).  Both VIP and General Admission tickets include a 6 oz. souvenir tasting glass with the freedom to enjoy 2 oz. samples from any exhibiting brewery.  Food will be available for purchase.  Designated driver tickets are available for $10 each.  No one under 21 is permitted and photo ID is required for entry.  The event will take place outdoors, under tents, and will be held rain or shine.  Event programming will be held indoors.  Tickets can be purchased at www.Cliveden.org.

Cliveden is home to seven generations of the Chew family and is a site which highlights the story of America's continuing struggle for freedom. It offers house tours from April through December, as well as year round programming including concerts, lectures, workshops, and annual celebrations.  Cliveden serves as a central resource center for Philadelphia's historic Northwest community.  Visit www.Cliveden.org for more information.

The Cliveden Winter Beer Festival is brought to you by Starfish Junction Productions and www.beerheads.com producers of the Philly Craft Beer Festival, voted one of the "Top Ten Beer Festivals in America" by Forbes Traveler.

Looking for a good beer AND good Mexican food?

The other night I went out for dinner with my family and was not surprised when they suggested Mexican food (we have a thing for it you might say.)  I was surprised, however, when I sat down at the table in Northern Liberties' Cantina Dos Segundos that there was a decent selection of craft beer.  Located just north of The Standard Tap on 2nd Street where Azure used to be, Dos Segundos has food that everyone enjoyed that ranged from exotic to simple, the service was good, and the drinks were even better.  Not only did I enjoy the beers, but the mixed drinks were well received as well.  I'd recommend this place to anyone who enjoys a good mexican dish.

In the upcoming August/September issue of the magazine, we feature an article on tap handles as art and got the chance to talk to Alan Newman of Magic Hat for it.  Due to the focus of the article, a small bit of info was left out that I thought should be shared with everyone.
